Flying Biscuit 101

Kitschy, colorful and all-around fun, Flying Biscuit is a spot that doesn’t take itself too seriously. They serve three squares a day, all made with fresh ingredients and playful touches (try their “moon dusted” potatoes if you don’t believe us). It’s a #PosiVibesOnly destination with something for everybody, from families and health nuts, to breakfast connoisseurs, brunch aficionados, and ‘errbody in between.

Here, breakfast is served all day, fluffy biscuits come with everything, and life is good (how could it not be when you’ve got homemade jam and a mimosa flight?). They’re a funky spot serving southern-inspired comfort food with a touch of homespun charm. Maybe it’s the secret ingredient in their infamous grits, but something about coming here just makes us want to don our best tie-dye, throw shakas, and order up a plate of seasonal pancakes for the table.

Flying Biscuit’s got a bustling, dog-friendly outdoor patio (which just got a nice new facelift btw), a full bar, and a massive, all-day menu of hearty and wholesome eats. Their brunch scene is always bumpin’ (good luck getting a table!), their portions are generous, and their vibe is sublime. If Leslie Knope was a real person, we’re 100% sure she’d eat here on the daily, and if that doesn’t sell you, nothing will.

What to Order

Flying Biscuit’s got a diverse, scratch-made menu full of southern faves, healthy options, and indulgent dishes. Their entire menu is always available so feel free to order a Flying Shrimp Po Boy for breakfast or Eggs Benny for dinner—it’s all good, all day long.

There are a ton of options here, so we’ve narrowed down the must-haves for whatever sitch you’re in.

When You Want It All: Egg-stravaganza

If you want ALL the breakfast foods, opt for the Egg-stravaganza, which comes with two eggs, chicken sausage, bacon, grits, and a couple of slices of whole-wheat French toast (topped with raspberry sauce and honey creme Anglaise, naturally). As one Flying Biscuit devotee tells us, “if you order anything else, you’re wrong.”

For the Perfect Hangover Cure: Dirty Bird

Rough night? Order up the Dirty Bird, for a hearty, stick-to-your-ribs, cure-all. Made with two biscuits, chicken sausage gravy, queso and topped with Oven-Fried Chicken, it might induce a mild heart attack, but it’s well worth it.

The Most Popular Item on the Menu: Shrimp + Grits

We’ll be blunt: if you don’t like Shrimp + Grits here, you’re not going to like them anywhere.

Perfectly spiced blackened shrimp in a tangy roasted red pepper sauce on top of FB’s signature  (trust us, they’ve earned this name), this is one fluffy, flavorful dish that will ruin you for grits anywhere else.

If You Need a Little Southern Comfort: Oven-Fried Green Tomatoes or Pimento Cheese Fritters

Sometimes you just need some down-home cooking. Order up either of these Southern classics as an app to start your meal off right.

If  You’re In Boozy Brunch Mode: Mimosas, Manmosas + More

Looking to kick things up a notch? Flying Biscuit’s got boozy brunch on lock. Order up a Mimosa Flight and you’ll get to sample four mini glasses off fruit-forward bubbly. If that’s too *dainty* for you “manly-types”—go for the Manmosa, a hefty mason jar full of Raleigh Brewing’s First Squeeze, orange-flavored vodka, and a dash of OJ.

They’ve also got FOUR different kinds of Bloody Marys, including the Super Bacon Mary, which comes topped with (you guessed it) a full side order of bacon and a bacon-salt rim.

If You’re Trying to Stay Healthy: They’ve Got Lotsssss of Options

Whole wheat toast topped with avocado, veggies, and eggs. Herb-crusted chicken breast, fried crisp in the oven. Lean proteins and fresh, local produce. If you’ve got an eye for it, it’s not hard to spot the healthy options, slyly worked into Flying Biscuit’s robust Southern menu.

It’s super easy to customize your order to fit whatever dietary concerns you’ve got, though we’ve been pleasantly surprised to find plenty of healthy, drool-worthy dishes to order right off the menu, no substitutions necessary.

Our fave? Hands down, The Acai Bowl, which is an absolute steal. Topped with fresh fruit and lots of goodies, this massive bowl (seriously, it’s easily double the size of any other Acai bowl in town) is not only refreshing but gives you some serious bang for your buck.

Pro Tips

  • All appetizers are half price after 5p.

  • Brunch is BUSTLING. Call ahead for a table or snag a seat at the bar, which is first-come, first-serve.

  • Pretty much anything can be made vegan—just ask.

  • Want to skip the wait at brunch? Outfit your fave pup with one of their dog bandanas ($10 with all proceeds going straight to an animal rescue group) and anytime you’ve got Fido (and that magic bandana) with you, they’ll fast pass you both to the front of the line for a patio table.

  • On Friday nights, they host live tunes via Friday Night Mics with food and drink specials, plus a “special surprise” every week.
