In honor of NC Craft Beer Month, Chana Lynn of @RaleighWhatsUp is taking you on a tour of her favorite spots around the Triangle to sip on NC beer this spring. Cheers!
“The beer beer would drink if beer could drink beer.”
Of the new breweries in the area, this is one of my favorites. Quality beer and a fantastic outdoor two-tiered patio make it a great spot for hanging out with friends on a lovely spring evening. There’s always a good food truck parked in front as well. There’s some real creativity behind this stand out brewery—be sure to get the story on the name!
Favorite beer: try the Rye Pale Ale for light tasty drinking!
By now, everyone has heard of the Raleigh Beer Garden on Glenwood South. It’s definitely a place to hit when the weather gets warm and you're craving a cold brew in the sun. With 350+ beers on tap, this place will surely have whatever beer you're looking for! Tons of outdoor seating to choose from, including a rooftop patio. There are some tasty food options as well, if you want a charcuterie plate or an amazing fried pretzel to go with your beer. Bring a group, grab a table outside and enjoy their extensive selection of beer, including one level dedicated just to NC beer!
Looking for a great place to eat, drink and explore? Carrboro is the perfect spot. Park the car, walk around and explore the many different artsy, earthy and fun places, including Steel String Brewery. This place has a nice variety of brews to sample. Grab a flight or a pint and enjoy outdoor drinking on the patio. Great for people watching and it’s also pet and kid friendly. This creative and free spirited brewery captures Carrboro’s vibes perfectly!
“Old School Classics, New School Originals.”
This brewery is BRAND NEW and just celebrated its grand opening at the beginning of April! It is doing a killer business and making fantastic brews. The town of Cary was ready for a great brewery and Bond Brothers is sure to breathe new life into the heart of downtown. It’s a great space with plenty of outdoor and bar seating—grab some friends and make it a day out!
Favorite beer: Local IPA
Located in the Five Points neighborhood of Raleigh, this brewery is perfect for hanging out on a warm spring day. Kid friendly and dog friendly, there’s a great neighborhood vibe going on here. Their specialties are Belgian and IPA style beers, they use sustainable practices and local ingredients and are passionate about experimenting. With a couple of other breweries and bottle shops close by, the neighborhood makes for a great small beer crawl. Just be sure to finish at Neuse River—the relaxed atmosphere shouldn't be missed and there's always a great crowd gathered on the weekend. Plus, it has the prettiest brewery bathrooms in Raleigh!
Favorite beer: Biere de Neuse (light farmhouse/saison)
Feeling like a road trip? Head out to Saxapahaw and sample some amazing farmhouse style ales. Sit down and sample some flavors you've probably never heard of before! These guys are not afraid to experiment and their beers are always worth the drive. Put it on your day trip list!
Favorite beer: Newlin’s Original Belgian Oatmeal Pale
Also located on Glenwood South in Raleigh is the fabulous new lifestyle store called Devolve Moto. At first glance, it might appear to be just a retail store for bikers, but upon second glance you'll see it also houses lifestyle gear to be enjoyed by all—and a sleek coffee and beer bar. When warmer weather strikes, watch for the garage doors to go up. Grab a seat up front, sip on a cold brew and settle down to people watch. You might even do a little retail therapy while you’re at it!
One of the newest and most elegant hotels in the area, this renovated boutique hotel has a rooftop that offers up a panoramic view of Durham! The Roof features an indoor bar, plus covered and open-air lounge seating on a large patio space. This is a great spot for grabbing a drink before dinner or a show or just relaxing with friends and watching the sun go down.
This place just makes me happy as soon as I walk in. There are always great tunes spinning on the turntable (they’ve got a fantastic collection of vinyl) and if you’re hungry, you came to the right place! The menu features out of this world gourmet salads and sandwiches and their charcuterie plate pairs nicely with a quality beer from the tap. Choose to sit inside in the AC or snag a seat outside on the front patio, regardless, you'll be back again.
This brewery is the perfect spot for meeting up with larger groups of friends. Spread out in the beautiful, spacious taproom with a group and play board games, listen to music, drink great NC beer and enjoy food truck dining. It’s out on the fringes of North Raleigh, but once you get there you’ll recognize it as a hidden gem. They recently started brewing their own beer and they usually have some guest NC taps!
Trophy Brewing Company now has an awesome new production facility and taproom (Big Trophy) with an outdoor patio for enjoying brews in the sun. Their new taproom is located on the outer edge of downtown near the NC State Farmer’s Market. They generally always have food trucks on site and the cool rebranded Pop-Up Raleigh vintage market will be held monthly on the third Saturday at this location. Be sure to add it to your list of new places to visit this spring, if you haven’t tried it already.
Favorite Beer: Trophy Wife (session IPA)
Recently, I stumbled on Beer Study in Chapel Hill and was pleased to discover a very laid back place to sit and play card or board games, read, chat with other locals and enjoy a casual, but high quality beer from a plastic cup. If you are looking to try new beers and want to learn more about beer, these folks are very knowledgeable, offer a great variety and the super relaxed atmosphere makes it a nice place to hang for a bit!
Sam’s Bottle Shop in Durham offers up a large and diverse selection of beer, wine, ciders, meads and much more! This is the second location of the legendary Durham institution known as Sam’s Quik Shop, which has a long history in Durham. After having a look around the store, head up the stairs, grab a beer on draft at the bar and make your way out to the large outside patio. It’s a sunny spot to sit and relax after a long day at work or visit after retail therapy at the nearby Streets at Southpoint!
Baseball and beer were meant to go together! With the 2016 Bull Durham baseball season just getting started and the new Bull Durham Beer Company located in the ballpark, there’s never been a better pairing. Grab a tour of their state-of-the-art brew house or grab a pint at the game. What better way to spend the day or night drinking NC beer and cheering on the Bulls?
