8 Surprises From Our First CycleBar Class (Spoiler: There's a Mimosa Bar)

Thursday, Nov 30 2017

We'll admit it, we don't work out as much as we should. So when approached to try a trendy cycle gym (yes, for free*) we were pretty stoked. We had dreams of turning into effortless athleisure gals with Giselle-like legs and Sasha-fierce level confidence.

While, we're not quite there yet, we're happy to report what we learned. Because it's always a little daunting being the fresh face in the crowd, we broke down the biggest surprises about our CycleBar experience. Think: brunch + a bangin' build-your-own mimosa bar, crazy sore arms and one-on-one attention (so ya don't look like a newbie).

*we aren't just VIPs, everyone's first class is free!

Surprise 1 — You don’t have to bring anything, just yourself

Time is never on our side, so that fact that you can stroll into CycleBar without stopping to check if you’ve covered all your bases—water, shoes, hair thing, deodorant (don’t pretend it hasn’t happened to you)—is pretty sweet. First timers are hooked up with a free water bottle and everyone can trade in their sneaks for cycle shoes (fo’ free).

Surprise 2 — Newbies get 1-on-1 attention

Walking into a new spot always feels a little daunting—the fear of making a fool of yourself is way too real. The CycleBar crew makes you feel totally taken care of by walking you through every step of the process—from picking out the right size shoes to finding your bike to the truly terrifying part, clipping into the bike (def couldn’t do this solo on round one). You get one-on-one attention until you’re locked into your bike—no room for error! So, even though you might feel inadequate, you won’t look it.

Surprise 3 — The atmosphere makes all the difference

We've tried a cycle class or two before, but nothing quite to this caliber. When the class kicked off with a rave-like atmosphere—think flickering, color-changing lights and loud, pulsing music—we were undecided if this was working for us. But the combo of lights, music, volume, energy and instructor (shoutout to Sheena) make for an almost hypnotizing 50 minutes. It's a total distraction from the outside world with a bumping playlist.

Surprise 4 — It’s not just a lower body workout

All preconceived notions about cycling were shattered when upper body work was introduced. Think push ups on the bike while you’re cycling to the beat of the song. That ish is hard! You might even work with a weighted bar for an entire song (aka eternity) to really make 'em burn. Biceps, triceps, all the little ones that don’t get a lot of love, all got some attention. We’re only a little embarrassed to say that our arms were shockingly sore after a cycling class.

Surprise 5 — Lavender towels are the sh*t

After working up a pungent sweat for 50 minutes, we were met with the sweet, sweet aromas of lavender towels. We were given a heads up about these before the class, but kinda shrugged it off. It might just be the thing that keeps us coming back! CycleBar knows it’s all in the details.

Surprise 6 — The Sunday brunch spread is baller

Full disclosure, the main motivator for straying from our (semi) usual workout routine? The anticipation of the Sunday brunch + mimosa bar. A spread of parfaits and build-your-own mimosas greeted us after class and it’s exactly what a post-workout boozy brunch should be—light, colorful, fun and social. A mimosa filled with berries is packed with antioxidants, right?

Surprise 7 — Stats hit your inbox right after class

An email hit our inbox right after class breaking down how we performed with class rank, calories and a couple of other key metrics, but really we just cared about those two. The class rank is pretty genius—a definite motivator to come back and ride faster/harder/stronger/better.

Surprise 8 — Burn over 600 cals in just one class

No guarantees, you gotta work for it, but you can burn major calories in a class. We’re not claiming to be fitness experts, but we’ve been to a few classes and we were impressed with this stat and thought it was well worth sharing.
