Home of the North Carolina State government for almost 170 years, the capitol building located at Union Square is an incredibly unique historical building. Partly a museum North Carolinian education resource, the building is fully furnished and well-kept to show visitors the Old North State's political arena of the 19th and 20th centuries. You can take a self-guided or show up for a public tour to hear lots of interesting historical facts about the capitol. The public has access to the upper floors and can look into the former Senate and House of Representatives chambers. Its architectural style is one of the best kept examples in North America. (photo opp!) Be sure to enjoy the Union Square grounds on a nice day, too. Oh, and for groups of ten or more people, you have to schedule your visit.
