There's a new place to hang out in Durham, and it's not your average bar or coffee shop. First of all, it's gorgeous beyond measure—like the Pinterest-inspired apartment of your dreams—with details like a swinging leather couch, a 'gram-worthy plant wall and millennial pink neon sign and artsy vintage details that you could explore all day long. It literally took my breath away when I walked in.
It's also different because the people sitting around you won't be total strangers. Instead, they'll be carefully-curated members and potential connections who could change your life.
Union Member House is a members-only club that aims to be a social network IRL. Kind of like a country club but for a younger generation. Or a trendy co-working space combined with your favorite bar where everyone is there because they want to meet you.
If it sounds crazy exclusive, don't worry—while members do have to apply and pay a membership fee, the Union Member House team is really only interested in finding folks who are excited to connect with other people. Beyond that, they want to be as inclusive as possible and build a diverse community everyone can learn and grow from. It could be a good space for an entrepreneur or freelancer looking for a place to work and find partners or clients. It could be good for someone new to town trying to meet new people. It could just be good for someone who wants to be tapped into the movers and shakers of Durham.
During the day, members have access to the space to come work done, have a coffee meeting and just generally have a home away from home. At night, Union Member House will transform into an event space with programming driven by member interests. For example, if they find a lot of their members love jazz, they may decide to launch a monthly jazz series.
Union Member House is also hoping to use their dedicated team and the help of technology to help make connections amongst their members and allow them to feel tapped into the community. During onboarding, the staff will learn all about the interests of each of their members to help them make valuable introductions, and their concierge staff will always be available to help you out if you're looking for a particular person or service.
They are now accepting applications, and if accepted membership is $250 a year. If you're still unsure what it's all about and want to experience the community for yourself, Union Member House will be throwing house parties Nov 14-16 to give anyone a chance to peek behind the velvet curtain.
