Ponysaurus (Durham)

Ponysaurus Brewing Company

“The beer beer would drink if beer could drink beer.”

Quality beer and a fantastic outdoor two-tiered patio make this a great spot for hanging out with friends on a lovely spring evening. Even more reason to love them, check out their upcoming concert event “Don’t Be Mean to People” on Saturday May 6, 5–11p in support of the Golden Rule and the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina, promoting and protecting the civil liberties of everyone. The show features Hiss Golden Messenger and Megafaun, to name just a couple great musical performances.

Favorite beer: Golden Rule Saison, of course!

Bond Brothers (Cary)

Bond Brothers Beer Company

“Old School Classics, New School Originals.”

This brewery just celebrated their 2nd Annual Mid-Town Square Spring Fest earlier in April to kick off NC Beer Month. They are doing a killer business and making fantastic brews! The town of Cary was ready for a great brewery and they are breathing new life into the heart of downtown. It’s a great space with plenty of outdoor and bar seating. Grab some friends and make it a day out!

Favorite beer: Local IPA is my favorite, but check out the Cary Goth, a light beer they brewed for the Spring Fest and Mountain Goats concert.

Lynnwood Brewing Concern (Raleigh)

Lynnwood Brewing Concern

If you are a Raleighite and you have pets or kids or both, this is a great spot for you! They draw the couples, families, pet lovers and young and old alike to their brewery every weekend. There’s a neighborhood feel and real sense of community here. Luckily, they offer plenty of seating inside and out for hanging with a group of friends on a lazy weekend. Food trucks are often onsite and they’ve got plenty of their own beers on tap to choose from. Grab a beer and hang out for a bit in this great local beer garden.

Favorite beer: I like the Mosaic Pale Ale, since I prefer a session beer that can feature a full hoppy flavor. But, if the Coconut Porter is on tap, I definitely suggest trying that!

Brewery Bhavana (Raleigh)

Brewery Bhavana

Honestly, I don’t even know where to begin, except that the overall sense of beauty, peace and happiness was very present on my first visit to Bhavana. Such a well thought out space full of intention and good vibes, and some of the best beer being brewed in NC (in my humble opinion)! The staff are friendly and welcoming, and you can grab a beverage and browse the library and bookstore that share the same space. Take in the smell of fresh flowers from the flower shop too! Stay for dinner if you like, as they offer dim sum and other wonderful food offerings.

Favorite beer: That’s a tough one. I loved all the ones I tried, which were the Pithy (a standout!), Glean and Yield. Can’t wait to come back and try some more!

Neuse River Brewing (Raleigh)

Neuse River Brewing Company

Located in the Five Points neighborhood of Raleigh, this brewery is perfect for hanging out on a warm spring day. Kid and dog-friendly, there’s a great neighborhood vibe going on here. Their specialties are Belgian and IPA style beers, they use sustainable practices, local ingredients and are passionate about experimenting. There's always a great crowd gathered, especially on the weekends. Be sure to get tickets for their upcoming Sailing the Seas of Sour on Sunday, April 30 from 12-4p. With over 10 different flavors of their Berliner Weisse-style sour, this event benefits the Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina. The event also has a nautical theme featuring an oyster roast and seafood boil.

Favorite beer: Biere de Neuse (light farmhouse/saison).

State of Beer (Raleigh)

State of Beer

This place just makes me happy as soon as I walk in. There are always great tunes spinning on the turntable (they’ve got a fantastic collection of vinyl!) and if you’re hungry, you’ve come to the right place! The gourmet salads and sandwiches are out of this world, and their charcuterie plate pairs nicely with a quality beer from the tap. Sit inside for the AC or sit outside on the patio, you will definitely be putting them into your beer rotation as you discover that this is a great spot to come back to again and again.

Grab a 32 oz crowler of draft beer to go!

Trophy Tap & Table (Raleigh)

Trophy Tap & Table

Trophy Brewing Company’s newest addition in the former Busy Bee space features over 12 taps of Trophy brews, a specialized menu featuring rotisserie chicken and tacos, as well as lots of sides. Saturday and Sunday they offer brunch! Now that the weather is nicer, enjoy a cold beverage on their rooftop patio.

Favorite Beer: The Trophy Wife is my go-to, but I also love the D.A.V.E., a single hop pale ale, The Cloud Surfer, an American IPA and The Milky Way, a salty caramel sweet stout.

Haw River Farmhouse Ales

Feeling like a road trip? Why not head out to Saxapahaw and sample some amazing farmhouse style ales? Along with the brewery, Saxapahaw features other great spots just around the corner such as a butcher’s market, the Eddy Pub and a local grocery. Grab a seat inside or out and sample some flavors you probably have never heard of before! These guys are not afraid to experiment and their beers are always worth the drive. Put it on your daytrip list!

Favorite beer: Newlin’s Original Belgian Oatmeal Pale.

Bull Durham Beer Co. (Durham)

Durham Bulls Athletic Park
Next Tuesday: Bulls vs. Rochester Red Wings

Baseball and beer were meant to go together, and with the 2017 Bull Durham baseball season just getting started and the Bull Durham Beer Company located inside the ballpark, there’s never been a better pairing! Grab a tour of their state-of-the-art brew house or grab a pint at the game. What better way to spend the day or night than drinking NC beer and cheering on the Bulls!

Favorite Beer: Try the Lollygagger Kolsch light crisp—pairs perfectly with a baseball game. (By the way, Bulls are playing Tuesday, April 25 through Sunday, April 30!)

The Cardinal (Raleigh)

The Cardinal Bar

Located in the former Cardinal Cab location on N. West Street off Glenwood is the perfect place to chill and enjoy a change of scenery. The Cardinal is like the perfect dive bar, but with upscale views of the city. They’re known for cocktails, but always have a couple local beers on tap, generally from Crank Arm. Be sure to grab a couple of delicious hot dogs to snack on while you quench your beer thirst, they’re amazing. Settle in with a dog, a drink and a seat on the front porch and take in Raleigh from a new perspective.

Favorite Beer: Crank Arm Unicycle.

House of Hops

House of Hops is located in North Raleigh just off Glenwood/70. Stop in and join the relaxed crowd at House of Hops, a bottle shop with 24 rotating beers on draft. Food trucks are always on location Tuesday through Saturday.

On April 30, House of Hops is hosting an event called In the Company of Women on Sunday from 1–5p. It will feature inspiring and motivational talks from Highland Family-Owner and President Leah Ashburn, Highland Brewmaster Hollie Stephenson, Fullsteam Sales Director Mary Eliza McRae, NC Craft Brewers Guild Executive Director Margo Knight Metzger, plus the delicious food from Pho Nomenal Dumplings (also women-owned!) and live music! Lonerider (Raleigh)

Lonerider Brewing Company

The perfect place to drink on a warm day! Round up some friends, head West and get over to the Hide Out off Westgate Road in North Raleigh at 540. One of the first NC breweries, these outlaws have been brewing beer since 2009. I remember coming to their first free tasting nights in their former space, where the beer is brewed now. This is one of my favorite go-to beer drinking watering holes in Raleigh! Coming up on April 30, join them for Triangle Beagle Rescue of North Carolina from 2–7p to raise money for the beagles! You will sample beagle-inspired brews, and $1 from each pint sold will be donated to the cause.

Favorite beer: Hoppy Ki Yay or Peacemaker Pale Ale.
